At the EAFE conference held in Rome last year, Pavel Salz delivered a powerful keynote address on the economic health of European fishing fleets. His findings were stark: 80% of the EU fishing fleet is economically unsustainable in the medium to long-term. Without targeted policy interventions, the fleet could shrink to just 25% of its current size in the next 20-30 years.
The implications are profound:
- Food security: Marine food production and its diversity would decline, and the EU would become more dependent on imports (possibly to over 80% of consumption).
- Supply chains: The processing and trade sectors would source from non-EU suppliers, changing the industry.
- Cultural impact: The legacy of coastal communities may disappear, leaving it only in museums.
Do these projections convince you? Are there other pathways you envision?
Join us for the first EAFE online workshop to discuss these important topics, share insights and explore potential pathways. Agree, disagree, or just intrigued, your perspective is vital in shaping the future of EU fisheries.
This workshop is intended to be highly interactive. We assembled some reading material (either a long read of 10 pages or a short read of less than 2 pages) to give you the opportunity to reflect on certain elements before joining the conversation. All the information can be found in the document below.
